The days of SONIC titles on the Dreamcast seem to have reached their end, but the erstwhile speedy hedgehog is still doing his thing on the GameCube. Plenty of classic characters join Sonic for this installment of the long-running series, including the likes of goofy old Knuckles, the ever-so-evil Dr. Robotnik, and others. The big bad guy this time around is a new character named Shadow, a nefarious hedgehog whose raw abilities rival Sonic’s. More than the traditional platform experience offered up by Sonic chapters of the past, this one features an array of modes. The two-player battle mode allows you to race, dig for treasure, and fight your way through countless locales, and there are a dozen playable characters to choose from (Amy Rose, Metal Sonic, and Chaos Zero among them). You don’t have to be a die-hard SONIC fan to get plenty of mileage from this wholly original franchise installment.
